well crap crap and double crap. Since my engine build this summer, my clutch slipped at the top end. THOUGHT I had the answer in the form of a new Barnett pressure plate that was SUPPOSED to be about 20% stronger than stock. Plate was thicker than stock for sure. Finally got around to swapping it out today and MAN O MAN I could barely pull the clutch lever with my old feeble arthritic hands (didn't realize I was such a weakling dammit).

So for now I had to put the stock pressure plate back in. What are my options for a stronger clutch while still being able to pull the levefairly comfortably? I'm somewhere around 100hp/100tq.

AIM VPC. I've been running the 83T for years with an easy pull and great clutch bite. No slippage with 114 ft lb torque and I ride it hard sometimes.

I use a pre 03 clutch spring with it. Much softer than the SE spring, but stiffer than the 06 and up spring.

steveh326,
Install a reduced effort clutch actuator and ramps...Harley, Burley Brand and others make a kit. Regardless of what spring you use, the easy pull kit will reduce your required force significantly.

  • Kits with ramps change the clutch "throw" where it takes more lever travel to engage the clutch and visa versa..
  • HD Reduced Effort Kit includes the ramp/ ball, Burley Lite Clutch does not.
  • HD kit includes a lighter clutch spring which you can toss..
Simple installation with ramps or without (after the @!@#$&* exhaust is removed to get acces to the side cover screws). Ebay usually has a good selection (lots of sources for a reduced effor clutch) and best prices.

I picked one in the middle (the 37871-98A) and have no problems now. I did notice a bit of an increased pull, but it is not anywhere near what the SE spring feels like. Where I really notice it, is in heavy traffic when I am working the clutch a lot, other than that, I forget I even changed it.

Here's a list of some springs with some tension specs. (borrowed from iclick) Note the Police spring tension spec (in Bold) is one step lower than the SE

37882-06 (117 KgF) 2006-88”, 2007 thru 2010-96”
37871-04 (135 KgF) 2004-05 88” and 2010 Limited
37871-98A (145 KgF) 1998-2003
37807-03 (165 KgF) 2007 thru 2010-103 ”Police"
37951-98 (175 KgF) Current SE

VPC is a 20-30 minute job with no loss of fluid. This thing is bullet-proof. No fooling with springs, cables ramps, etc. Many heavy bikes, such as the TG are running the 84T. I run the 70T over an SE spring on a heavily loaded trike puling a trailer and never have any slipping problems. If my cat had a thumb....she could pull the clutch lever.

It simply replaces the ring over the diaphragm spring through the derby cover.

I've been running one since 04, and I just can't think of anything but good stuff to say about it. (04 Heritage / 08 Heritage)

Rivera Pro clutch with the easy pull lever!!! Depending on build you might need different heavy spring, and possibly the VPC!!!

I know this is an old thread, but it's been winter here and so much ice have not been able to ride. Finally got around to installing the -98a clutch spring, and got some miles on the bike in the last couple days. so far I could not detect any slippage. I think this thing is the answer to my prayers... clutch seems to be holding, and clutch pull is not bad at all. I did drop out the mobil 1 when I changed the spring and replaced it with formula + just to play it conservative but I doubt that made much difference.

Many thanks to the folks that took time to reply here to give me some advice on my issue.

Dawg - Is the 98A the stock spring on a 96"? Also, what spring does Harley use on the new 103's?
