switching to redline
Draing all the Syn 3 out tonight and switching to Redline in the morning. Is there any reason I can't add the MTL to the primary through the primary inspection cover rather than the clutch inspection cover as the manual says? I want to check the the tensioner. Just adjusted the clutch and see no reason to open it if I don't have to.

RE: switching to redline
According to the service manual, you fill the primary until it gets to the bottom of the derby cover hole. That would be about 32oz (?) or so. Unlessyou have something like a flexible bore scope (or colonoscope - which I don't want to know about), it's impossible to accuratly fill it.
That being said, I filled my '97 from the inspection cover and just added the recommended amount of fluid. I didn't remove the derby cover to check it. It seemed to run just fine, and the stock clutch lasted >40K miles of abuse.

Thanks Bob, filled it through the inspection cover. Much easier. The Shockproof heavy definitly smoothed out the tranny. Can't really tell a difference with the MTL in the primary, but I fell better with the Redline over Syn 111.
As for the colonscope, seen one first hand, no fun !

RE: switching to redline
I just put Redline in 3 holes. 20-50 in engine, MTL in primary, and Heavy Shook in trans. My first impression, its better than Syn 3. The gears seems to go in place better. Engine seems to run smoother.
I also put on the PCIII, which with the new lube has dropped my temp atleast 25 degrees. I wish I had this knowledge sooner and I will only use Redline and the like from now in any bike I run. PCIII or SERT is also a must, it just makes your bike run so much better.

Don't see how you can accurately read the primary oil level through any hole. "Fill till visible at the bottom primary case through the derby cover" ain't exactly precision tolerances.
Just put the recommended amount in and call it good. If you still feel queasy about filling the primary through the inspection cover, measure how much you put in to bring the level up to the bottom of the dearby cover hole and keep using that amount.

Not sure how you could see in the primary to correctly check the oil level without taking the derby cover off.
