Default Starter Question

Starter question

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just started this recently, when I start the bike it sounds like the starter is still running after the engine has started, then it finally stops. I just had a new transmission put in recently, not sure if that could have caused it. Any ideas on this? I was thinking maybe solenoid or starter going bad. It is a 95 with 10.5 to 1 compression, and I believe it is ths stock starter. No compression release on the engine.

I'm leaning more towards a lose ground wire or solenoid issue.

Sounds like a solenoid problem hanging up.

I checked the power cable from the battery to the starter and found the connection (metal ring) was burnt in half , the ring that goes on the starter bolt was a half of a ring, so I am going to start with a new cable and see what that does. It could be that is the result of the solenoid hanging, so if it still does it, I will take that apart and clean and inspect/replace parts. The starter clutch would be my next place to look if all the simple stuff fails. All of this is better than buying a new starter, prices start at $300 and go up.

Generally speaking when you find a fault at some point in the cable or terminals like you have, it's an indication that it was either the weakest link in the circuit or that is where the problem was. If you have a bad connection on the battery terminal and have problems cranking, just hold the start button for a couple of seconds and then locate the hot terminal and you found the problem source but clean them all anyway.

If your larger engine or hi torque starter requires more amps than the cable itself can supply, then you will melt it at the weakest point. Usually in this situation, purchase some welding cable to add the end terminals to and make your own but get a good quality cable to start with and it should end your problems. The welding cable is constructed differently than battery cable and can conduct better than the typical battery cable can.

This is the problem some encounter when increasing the size of the engine or starter system. Increasing one aspect will usually require increasing other areas as well so they work with each other without problems.

ie, bigger engine/higher compression means a bigger starter to crank it over which means bigger cables and possibly bigger battery.
