Default Grabby clutch

Hi all,

I have an 02 FLSTC, everything seems to run fine but when I am pulling off from a stop my clutch "bites" at the end of the engagement. I have tried to be as smooth as possible with the release but still I can feel it grab as it engages. It does not matter if the engine is hot or cold or what kind of rpm's I am using when taking off. I have had a couple of other harleys and do not remember them engaging this way. Anyone have any ideas what could cause this?

Thanks,
Gene

Could be associated with the type of lube you are using or some warpage in the plates.

I am not sure what is in the primary for lube, I just picked up the bike a week or two ago. I am going to put synthetic lube in all three holes on the weekend, perhaps that will change or cure the situation.

I would advise not to put synthetic in the primary. It can cause slippage in the clutch plates. A 10/40 dino oil is best in there.
Also use a gear oil and not an engine oil in the transmission. You'll be glad you did.

Overfilling the primary case will cause the clutch to be grabby or not disengage at all.

With the scooter level the oil should be below the spring.

I have had Mobile V-Twin in the engine and primary since 1500 miles. I am at 7500+ and my clutch don't slip.

I run Mobile Synthetic 75/90 in the trans and My Low Rider loves it.

Drain it hot and let it stop dripping then put in what the manual says.

Running redline in mine, and its smoother than ever!

No clutch slippage at all.

Thanks for the replies, good one on the fluid level, I will put er up on the jack and check the level before I drain the fluid. I have never run syn in a hog before, it will be interesting to see how it performs.

It's noticable in an engine that has higher than stock output. In a stock motor, you may not notice/experience the slippage but it is known that it causes slippage in the clutch plates with synthetics in there on motors that have significantly higher output than stock. It's called a friction modifier in the oil that does it.
