Primary Interchange Question
Which years inner and outer primaries will work with my 92-up EVO style Ultima cases ? I used 92+ cases and a set of 1997 flywheels in the engine.
A friend has offered me a 1988 inner and outer primary but I'm not sure they'll work.
Can anyone shed any light on this ?
I'm putting the engine and a 1993 FXST transmission into an otherwise stock 1994 Harley Softail FXSTC.
Thanks.

1988 Primary covers a not the same, different starter configuration, on these old style covers there is a hole for the starter solenoid that goes into the primary cover. And you sure don`t want to go back to that old type starter...
`89 or later will be set up for the more modern starter configuration, but different years have different size diameter openings for the starter jackshaft.
So if you have the starter parts for the 94, find covers that fit the starter setup you have.
They must be covers for a Softail, not a rubber mount frame.
The easiest would be to find an inner primary cover for `93-`94. Outer cover for `89-`94.

You almost need the parts manuals when you start cross-breeding. The part numbers for the various years will tell you if they will cross or not.
I just did a bastardized transmission change on a 2000 Twin Cam. One would think all the early TC's would have had the same primary....but they don't. The reason I call mine a bastardized change was that the MOCO rotated the mounting holes on the transmission to primary connection about 1/4 inch in 2001. Just enough so that a 2000 inner primary would not bolt-up to a 2001 transmission. I had to get a 2001 inner primary. They used the one TC inner primary in 1999 and 2000...then rotated the mounting holes on the 2001, which will work through the 2005 model year. Who's to say that you will not discover something similar when you try and bolt-up that 88 inner to a 92 front and a 93 tranny.
I know there were some starter changes in the 88 model year and I think that starter configuration was used in 88 and 89 only, so you need to see what that does to you also. May be a starter mounting issue or may not with that 88 primary also.
It gets real hairy. I know this is not much help, but you may have to go through several tries of various components to get the stuff to match. Parts manuals or a source for those part numbers may be your easiest route in the long run. The MOCO has and will make small changes from model-year-to-model-year. You may have to come up with an 88 transmission to make that 88 primary work....as well as an 88 starter?

Is there any way to tell whether 60620-94B(inner) will work with 60506-94(outer) ? I don't have them available to me in person, I'd be getting them online.
I have a 97 starter to match my 97 flywheels, and I'd like to use it, so I'm kind of worrying at this point...
Piecing a bike together is not for the faint of heart, so thanks guys.
