Transmission Oil

old thread, ut ill interject
ive owned 17 harleys. in the last 14 of them, ive ran valvoline racing oil in all three holes. 50 wt in the summer (60wt if im going to be doing alot of heat of the day riding) and 20-50 in the winter. IMHO, it outperforms ANY oil harley has ever put out. i tried their "synthetic" oil before in two different bikes, and was disappointed both times. when it got hot, it got thin as water . valvoline racing oil is made for hard working engines and is designed not to break down like regular oils, is very heat resistant, ect. ive even compared it to amsoil, and ill pick valvoline racing oil 10 days a week over amsoil. heck, i just gave 2 quarts of that stuff away.
anyway, all a matter of personal preference i guess.

oil is oil and synthetics are no different they are all processed the same and differ very slightly from brand to brand.some companies use additives others dont find one you like and use it.as ealier poster said it all comes down to personal preference.oh and harley doesnt make oil so why assume its somehow inferrior when in fact its probably the same stuff most of us use under another name as are their spark plugs and oil filters to name a couple..just sayin

I wonder how my John Deere Hy-Gard 6944 transmission fluid would work in a tranny? The stuff has to be good at $14 a gallon.
I think I will slip some into a buddies bike and let him test it the next time he drops in for a change. It smells and feels just like the MOCO stuff.

6 speed trans oil change HOLY CRAP!!!
I just want to thank all of you who take part in these discussions. I read many posts and finally decided to change the trans oil in my 2011 glide with 4000 miles on it. I could only find Royal Purple 75 / 140 Synthetic gear oil locally($20.00 for a quart but well worth it), not that I am a brand freak, and installed it in my 6 speed. Since I live in Florida where it gets warm I went with a heavier oil. HOOOOLY CRAP-the trans shifts like an automatic! No clunk, or banging of gears. I just touch the shifter and it's in the next gear smooth as silk. What a difference.
Once again thanks all. My 84 bagger is next.
