Default Aggresive Clutch

Ok here's the situation, I have a 89 flhtp, it has I believe a 1990 clutch because the spring plate needs to be compressed to release the clip. Last season when riding from a dead start if I didn't let the clutch engage real easy in first gear the clutch would really scream and and just about stall. It has been doing this since I brought the bike home last year. I've learned to adjust to this aggressiveness but was wandering if some one in the know would have some input. Once bike is rolling I have no problem at all with the rest of the gears. Today I finally got aroundsteel to putting the clutch basket on a press to get to the plates and check for wear. I counted the plates and there were 8 steel and 9 friction plates and when I checked the manual there showed 8 friction 6 steel plates and 1 clutch spring plate. So whats up with the difference in number of plates? Is it more than likely this is an aftermarket clutch with extra plates causing the aggresive clutch action?
