Default Primary Chain too tight w/ Auto Tensioner?

I have a HD auto adjust chain tensioner on my '99 Dyna Convertible, installed before I bought the bike.

The tension in the chain feels very tight, not anywhere near 5/8"-7/8" the HD manual says it should be. It's closer to 1/4".

Should the chain be this tight with an auto tensioner?

Thanks,
Kurt

The HD auto adjuster, IMHO, has a weak point. That is, it tighten every time it senses a little slack in the chain. Yes, it's tight. On a cold engine the freeplay should be 5/8-7/8 of an inch, awarm engine is 3/8-58 in. I use a Hayden M6 adjuster on both bikes. They maintain pressure on the chain while accelerating and decelerating. A chain too tight willwear faster or ruin seals in the inner primary case.
