Default primary bearing question

Just had my 04 ultra in for 75,000 mile servicing.Everything ok, but said metal shavings on primary drain plug.Said they would have to take off primary cover and see if it was the outer bearing or something bigger.if deeper than under the cover would be 3 hours labor and bearing costs. Not sure if my extended warranty would cover this.I have a service manual but have not seen picture of this bearing, want to know more about it.Race removal and replacement is needed?Dont know about harley engines. Thanks for input.

I think they are talking about the mainshaft bearing, the outer race (rollers and cage) are mounted in the inner primary cover, the inner race is mounted on the mainshaft (the inner race has been known to creep inboard on the shaft).

A small amount of metal is normal on the primary drain magnet. There are a lot of things that make metal in there, the primary chain and sprockets, compensator ramps, metal clutch plates and starter gears.

Have there been any other indications of a problem, such as unusual noise, vibration, shifting problems?

Without looking at the drain plug magnet it is impossible to know if there is a problem or not.

Please keep us posted.

If you are refering to the race on the trans mainshaft. It travels and the fix i do is cut the race out and replace inner primary bearing with the Zippers sealed bearing/seal kit. It needs no race........

unless you have chuncks or a pound of shavings, it is probably normal. Your primary chain and sprockets throw off a lot of shavings. Part of the reason for the recommended frequency on the oil change. Post some pics at the nest fluid change, may just be a dealer looking to make some change.
