Can't find neutral?
Background:
2001 Titan
113" S&S
Baker 5 speed
New clutch, properly adjusted.
Primary filled with conventional oil to the proper level.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With the engine running, trying to get to neutral from first gear the tranny jumps straight to second gear.
With the engine running, trying to get to neutral from second gear the tranny jumps straight to first gear.
With the engine off, shifting to neutral from either first or second gear is normal, just slips right in.
Any ideas or suggestions on where to start?
Hey Sniper. Can't help you with your neutral problem as I have the same issue with my 1980 FXE. I adjusted trhe clutch this past weekend and that helped some. Also, the previous owner had too much oil in the isolated primary and I corrected that. Now, I can rev the bike a little and find neutral. Just letting it idle, there is no way to get the SOB in neutral...just like you, 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 1st with no stops in between. I may try to adjust the clutch again. I see where Sputhe Engineering (my bike has a Sputhe 5 into 4 conversion tranny that the previous owner installed) has a "neutral finder" solenoid kit because lots of folks have this complaint.
Start the bike in gear with clutch in. If it lurches your problem is still the clutch drag. This requires too much toe force to move the shifter and it overshoots nuetral once it pops out of first. The only things you can do is adjust the clutch play to minimums at the clutch itself and at the lever, or try a lighter primary fluid. ATF will eliminate the problem once and for all, depending on how you feel about it. You could also reposition the shift lever to give your foot an more educated feel for pressure with your foot arch giving a better pivot to toe reaction.
If you can steer me in the right direction I might be able to wing it without detailed instructions?
...and thanks Rbabos, I feel the clutch is adjusted well, no drag.
