Default Derby Cover Question

I'm changing my derby cover to one that has a license plate holder attached to it. Here's my situation.....when I took off the stock derby cover, I had the bike on its kickstand. It wasn't long after that oil leaked out and onto the ground. Since I'm a complete newb..heres my question.... was the liquid indeed oil? Also, how do I properly put the liquid/oil back into it? What I mean is, do I just fill 'er up with oil how I normal do....or is there a different way to replenish the oil in this case?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Yep, primary oil. Add it throught the derby cover hole. The manual tells the proper level.

Next time you pull the derby cover, make sure there is a 2x4 under the kickstand. If the bike is almost straight up, then the oil won't leak out.

Spend the $100 bucks on a bike lift, to hold the bike level. A 2x4 under the kickstand is dangerous. If your going to do stuff on the bike, lawnmower anything they are worth it.

Riding motorcycles is dangerous too... but we only live once.

Thanks for all the good advice. Yea a bike lift (or at least a friend holding the bike) is a good idea. So I basically put the oil back into the hole...nothing special? What oil do you recommend? It's an 06 low rider with about 1950 miles on it. I'm overly paranoid.

HD recommends HD Formula+ for the '06 Dynas in the primary and tranny. That's probably what's already in there, so stick with it.
