Default Clutch problem

I installed a 6 speed tranny in my '98 FLSTS and am having a problem getting the clutch to function. I have toyed with the adjusting screw for the clutch and also the cable adjuster. I found that with the bike in gear, when I scew the clutch adjusting screw all the way in so that the clutch basket moves as far as its able, the rear wheel is still not free. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. If it helps any, when I adjust the screw and the cable to their proper positions and pull the clutch lever, the the clutch basket does not appear to move a sufficient distance. Certainly not as far as when I use the adjusting screw to max out the springs. Hopefully I don't have to tear too much off to fix this. Thanks
