Default shifter is not connected.... whoa is me

just picked up a 96 FLSTN with 7800 miles and was giving her a clean up.

started her up to go for a ride pulled in clutch, put it in first gear heard a small clunk as normal when it went into gear and then the Shifter felt like it was dissconnected.

upon further inspection I find that all the linkage is hooked up all the way to the transmission correctly and working.

It acts as though the shift shaft that goes inside he transmission is broken in two inside the transmission. It does nothing and the bike is stuck in first. No noises from the tranny.

With the bike off I can pull on the shift shaft out towards the primary cover and is slides easily out touching the cover.

Is this a common occurence?

How tough a fix is this?

I have an extended warranty but can't get it to the dealer yet so I am not sure if its covered and wonder what this will cost out of pocket if its not. If its not covered I will gt the m,anual and dive in myself.

Thanks in advance

I sheared that shaft on a 4-spd in the 80s and it was an easy fix--just had to pull the tranny top cover. Unfortunately, I don't have a good mental picture your tranny and don't have a service manual handy either. You have a warranty; I'd take advantage of it.

Thanks for the reply.

I've been looking at diagrams all morning and a couple of pictures and think theres is a small possiblility that one of those cams springs or pins came off but it has alot of travel.

Thinking that the shaft is broken for sure. I just got the bike yesterday from my brother and I turned the warranty transfer papers in to the dealer yesterday.

i'm calling them in the morning to see about dropping off on tues. at latest. From looking at the pictures looks like top cover access might be possible but the primary will prob have to come off to get the new shaft in. then again if it goes in from the inside, maybe not. I think if one takes the oil tank off along with the seat, it might be doable in chassis without primary removal.

i'll keep you updated..

Any other instances?

man!!

I just got tthis bike back Sat.!!!

Took them a month to get to it!!

the shaft weld to the dogleg actuator on the shift shaft broke. Defective weld.

they replaced it and luckily it had extended warranty. it would have been $850. He said he had to pull the tranny and remove the entire gear set to replace this piece....

he said he had only seen one other one in his careerdo this.
