i have a 78 4-speed w/kick, i need to take of the end plate/cover/housing. on the kick side to replace seals, bushings, to stop/slow down oil leaks.is there ang do's/ don'ts i should know about before i start..

Not a hard job. If I remember right `78 had late model throwout bearing. kickgear attached to the shaft and throwout bearing on the end of the throwout rod. It should look like an astrik mark. If it's an early model throwout it'll be smooth and have a slot in it where you need to line up with the forks on reassembly. When you take the shaft out just note how the gear is lined up with the shaft. when you put it back together it can be off by a side so it won't mesh with the gear or transmission. When I've replaced kick shaft bushings I've found them to be a little tighter than I like. I just got an adjustable reamer and reamed them out to looser size. I can't remember the size but .715 sticks in my head. Good luck.
