Default Transmission Noise

My 2004 Deuce transmission has a significant amount of backlash, more noticeable in 3rd and 4th. Twice it's sounded like it was trying to come out of gear. A grinding sound that stops when I squeez the clutch. Of course the dealers are booked for a month and I'm headed on a trip in 10 days. I've just turned 14k on the bike. Changed the fluid 3k ago. Any help would be great. Thanks,

are you sure the slop/backlash isn't the primary? Your primary may need adjusting.

No, I'm not sure its not the primary. I just guessd the tranny because of the grinding. Would the primary cause the grinding / gear meshing sound as well. The first time it was a quit substantial grinding. I thought somehting was hung up hitting the bottom of the bike. It only lasted aobut 3 seconds and quit when I pulled the clutch. 300 miles later it did it agian but not as bad. 200 miles after that it did it once more. Its happneed only when I'm in gear and let off the throttel. First time I was in 3rd or 4th. Second time I was in first just pulling out of a driveway. This last time it happened in 3rd again.

Pull the tranny side cover off , with the bike level, and take the clutch ramp out...now take a good look at the throwout bearing..if theres ANY black on it..its burning..replace it and make sure your tranny is full when cold....the re-adjust your clutch to proper spec.

I pulled the inspection cover off last night to check the Primary. It had about 2 inches of slack in it. I adjusted to 5/8". Thanks guys.
