Primary chain...too tight
#3
primary? clutch?, linkage?
I was wondering if the primary chain could be too tight that the bike doesn't shift properly? I tightened my primary when it was hot, to the point there wasn't about but a 1/4 -1/2" of play...but it wasn't guitar string tight. Anyway driving the last couple times, bike wouldn't find fifth gear (also the shifting seem extended, like there were more play on the up and down movements). So, should I check the chain, or move on to inspecting the clutch, or linkage more closely?

While doing a service on my broinlaws old '05 Road King,I found that the primary chain was over tightened. It had no play from when an indy installed a chrome inner primary.
The bike had no shifting problems before I reajusted the chain.
I would try adjusting the chain to the cold spec, adjust clutch and inspect the shifter linkage.
If it wont shift properly after these adjustments, there must be somthing going on in the tranny.

well it wasn't the chain...1 mile down the road I notice the shifter lever is sticking...disasembled and greased, glad that is solved. Now, what other "preventative" maintenance do I need to be looking into performing in relation to the clutch, tranny, etc.?
