clunking or gear slipping when hard braking

Default clunking or gear slipping when hard braking

hey gang i am getting what sounds like gears slipping or downshifting (its a loud cluncking, grinding sound)from primary when i am braking hard...the sound might be coming from the xmsn but sounds like the primary is the source of the noise....please help if you have any ideas what this might be......thnx

Sounds like you are stalling to engine. Either downshift sooner or pull in the clutch.

thanks for the reply, the clutch is disengaged when this happens.....this is why i am a little worried

she is an 05 fatboy, the primary chain was just adjusted

Check the motor mounts. Could also be a loose compensator nut.

Default clunk upon hard breaking

hi fellas. this is my first post on this sight so pls. excuse any noob mistakes.i have an 06 flst thats doing the same thing.what did you come up with? any help would be much appreciated.

Howdy and welcome witter.

This sounds like gear lash or a compensator issue to me. I'm having a similar issue on an 07 right now. If you're unsure you should take the primary cover off and check it.

Naturally a service manual is your best friend when working on your bike.

hi boomerbob. i was kinda thinkin the same thing about the compensator. i have the service manual for the bike and i'LL definately referance it. can one simply remove the outer primary cover and retorque the nut? what size nut is it? thx a million
