Default Inner Primary replacement

I have a 3.37 upgrade planned in a few weeks, while i'm in there i want to upgrade to a SE clutch spring and HB-125. I have been also thinking about putting on a chrome inner primary.... As long as i have everything out for the 3.37 upgrade how difficult is it to swap out the whole inner primary for a chrome case? A guy told me this weekend that a chrome inner primary gets the clutch too hot... I'm having problems understanding how chrome conducts heat more than black.

Simple physics is involved. First, the chrome is plated to the original metal. This adds a barrier and the heat dissipates a bit slower. Secondly, black dissipates heat at a higher rate than chrome or polished metal.

Most importantly, a chrome inner primary won't get your clutch too hot. It's a non-issue. There isn't enough difference in the heat dissipation rate to matter in this particular case.

Those were my thoughts also, another myth blasted. Aside from possibly an inner gasket for the inner primary case is there anything else unexpected for replacement. I'm guessing there must be a race or bearing that needs to be replaced. It's not off yet to look at.

Thanks for any input

It depends on the model of bike. On the new Dyna's '06 you need to get the primary locking fasteners (bolts), they are a throwaway. They are part #786a. I believe if you buy the HD inner primary it comes with the bearings pre-installed. You would also need a locking bar to lock the clutch and comensating sprocket together in order to remove and reinstall them. This is due to the '06 Dyna models not having dowels to hold the primary to the case.

I'm going to do it on a '06 roadking. I think I have together what tools I need to r&r the comp sprocket and clutch basket. Aside from primary fluids is the backside of the inner primary case open to the engine or tranny?

The backside is not open to the tranny or the engine. Behind your compensating sprocket is the Alternator. And behind the clutch is the tranny shaft and the belt sprocket.

It's a easy but time consuming job.

Take a look at this link. https://www.hdforums.com/m_417410/tm.htm

I posted pics on it of when I did mine last winter. The pictures are in the last few posts. It may help.

Perfect time to do it. Also give you a chance to peak inside and see if there are any "while I'm in here" things to do.

Go for it. And remember we will want photo's. We love photo's.

Just talked to a HD tech at the stealership and he indicated that he tries and talk customers out of installing Chrome inner primaries. He says they all leak eventually and doesn't like the repeat work. He has tried all types of gaskets and sealers, silicon, etc. No problems with standard inner primaries, only the chrome ones.

Does anyone else have any problems with leaking CHROME inner primaries?
