Default 400 ft lbs? are they on crack?

My Harley service manual says the engine sprocket on my 76 bagger should be torqued to 400 ft lbs. The nut is about 1/4" thick. Are they completely out of their minds? Is this right?

Thanks,
Doug

It's a big nut. The head is 1-1/2", its not very thick so you socket doesn't get much nut to bite on. I’m sure 400 inch pounds would not be enough torque ..... 400 foot pounds just seems a bit ridiculous.

I can't imagine anything on a HD having 400 lbs of torque, and inch lbs on the engine sproket seems low. Send a PM to Shovelhead Bob. I'm sure he can get you on the right track.

Regards,

Bill

Here is the page out of the book. The values are in ft. lbs. unless noted otherwise.
