Default hard shift after repair HELP!

Hi all,new user here. I replaced the shifter linkage on my 98 fatboy. the length is the exact same as stock, but when i was tightening it i felt it click once like it was upshifting but then it felt like it might of clicked again (oops). Now i cant get it to shift up without having to heel kick it hard or then downshift with out having to kick it. I can get it through all the gears and it drops into first no problem. I didnt think i tweaked it that hard when tightening the linkage, all i had was a small 7/16 wrench and i also had my hand on the shifter so it wouldnt pull it to far. It has spring back and forth ,and i cant imagine i would have bent a shift fork because it does it through all the gears. Could i have just pulled it out of adjustment some how? Nothings simple is it ?

Put the scoot in Neutral..undo the linkage and re-set it..make sure your shifter is where you want it if you took it off prior(on the splines)

Thanks ,ill try it. should i reset it with the jam nut adjustment or where the shifter rides on the splined shaft. i already tried putting the original linkage back on and it does the same thing. Its still set at factory setting. I hope this means its just an adjustment. 50 dollar part turns into a 500 dollar repair, just my luck.[]

With the bike in neutral and the foot shifter where you want it...set the loosened jam nut at the tranny side.It might take a couple trys.

Thanks man ill try setting it first thing tommorow morning. Do you know if its possible to damage a tranny just by putting pressure on the shifter? It was only a short 7/16 wrench. Or does that just kick it out of adjustment inside. I didnt mess with the shifter on the tranny where its splined so im not sure if its inside or if it just slide the shifter backwards on the splines.

You said the spring works both ways..so thats good...i dont see how you could hurt a Harley tranny with a 7/16,s wrench...
