gear ratios on 78 lowrider
Hi,
I bought a rebuilder recently, Actually the thing "ran" fine, but
it was in such rough shape that my plan was to tear it down
completely from the first time I saw it.
After driving it for a week or so to see how it acted, I decided
that along with a ton of changes I'd seen in advance, I also
wanted to do some serious work on the drive train itself.
First off, I made my mind up that I wanted a belt drive final.
That, it turns out was really pretty simple. Not cheap, but pretty
simple.
Second, it was geared WAY to high to suit me, so I wanted to
lower the overall ratio, and
Third, I wanted to lower first gear even slightly more.
currently it has a Primo 41 / 61 tooth belt primary
the mainshaft gears are : 17 - 20 - 24 - 26
counter gears are: 24 - 21 - 17 - 15
(which I think is stock but I'm not really sure).
it came with 26 / 48 tooth combination on the final chain drive
and it has been converted to a 33 / 70 tooth combination
final belt drive.
I called a couple HD dealers and they both said they'd see
what "stock" was but haven't heard back so I haven't been
able to verify much of it.
The belt conversion should do the trick (I hope) for the first two
things I wanted to address.
Now, on #3 is where I could use a little help...
I found a set of old fl 1rst/2nd cluster (and they do fit) but I'm
afraid it will be TOO low of a ratio. Is there anything in between
what I have now and the old granny gears in the fl set?
and,
can someone PLEASE tell me the RIGHT way to figure total
engine to pavement gear ratio?
thanks in advance.
