Default Trans drain plug

I crossed the drain plug threads on my 02 softail's transmission. I rigged it up with black pipe and put 7,000 miles on it so far. I'm about to change the oil to be ready for winter storage and want to fix it the right way. Has anyone re-sleeved one of these or used a heli-coil? I would like to re-sleeve it so I can have steel instead of alluminum to use as the drain hole. The tranny case is alluminum and I don't want to cross the threads again. I appreciate everyone's help!

Yes, your can helicoil it. But best to remove the pan so it can be done correctly as it is very hard to do with the pan on the bike. OR you can use a fluid extractor to suck the hot trans oil out of the fill hole versus draining it. You might consider going to a heavier gear lube that can run 15-20,000 miles like Amsoil 85w140 severe gear or Redline Shockproof Heavy 75w250. That way you don't have to change it every season.
