Default visual primary lube level

hey guys...sorry, but i couldn't find exactly what i was looking for w/the search engine.

i dont have a manual yet so this is why i have to ask.

changed my fluids yesterday w/a buddy on my '02 heritage. when we filled my primary level something came up and as much as i hate to say it we had to put the "hurry up" on the job.

i may be ****, but i've gotta be assured the fluid level is proper. i dont know if we put in just under a quart or just over a quart so i need to know where the level should be w/the primary chain inspection cover off.

i just pulled it (chain inspection cover) to check it and the level is about 1/4" below the top of the white thing the chain rides on (when u look into the cover area).

im decent w/other mechanical areas on trucks and stuff but DONT want to screw up my bike. my buddy says it is okay but ive gotta know for sure and i dont have a manual yet.

and...it seems to be operating fine.

any input on a VISUAL level check would be appreciated.

oh, and by the way. this visual was with the bike on the stand but from some reading i've done it's supposed to be straight up and i think we were supposed to use the derby cover as well.

thanks in advance!!!

Pull off the derby cover, and with the bike sitting straight up the oil level should be at the bottom edge of the diaphragm spring, or 2 3/4 " from the centerline of the clutch adjuster screw.

You can check without removing the derby cover. Just drain into a quart measuring cup, see what you have, then refill the proper amount through the inspection cover. For a TC88 its 26 ounces.

thanks. hope i can find time to get to it pretty quick.

from my original post...does anyone know if that level sounds about right?? about 1/4" below the top of the white piece the chain rides on?

The chain adjustor can't be used to check proper level of fluid. You have to take off the derby cover. As stated previously, it should be just over the bottom edge of the diaphragm spring, with bike sitting straight up. Don't measure the fluid, just put in the amount you need to get to the proper level. The derby cover does need an o-ring to seal.
