Default Clutch cable

Does anyone have any info on replacing a clutch cable on a 1998 sportster?

Question 2006 sportster going to 12" ape hangers

I have a 2006 sportster 883. I want to put 12" apes on it, but I don't think my current clutch cable will reach. I have found longer brake lines. But nothing so far on clutch cables.

I have used Barnett cables on my '75 Nortons and my '77 Harley Cafe' Racer (XLCR) and I have had good luck with them over the years and I will use them again when I have the need so I would say give them a try and see how you like them. Check out their Web site at: http://www.barnettclutches.com

Do yourself a favor and buy a Service Manual for your year and model Harley. It will become a handy thing to have around as you service your bike. I have a '99 883 Sportster and if your bike is similar to mine and if I remember correctly, generally speaking, all you really have to do is loosen the cable tension adjusters under the rubber boot on the Clutch cable itself and then unfasten and remove the 5 or 6 bolts around the Clutch cover itself and then remove the Clutch cover. There is an O Ring type gasket that goes between the Clutch cover and the primary cover. Do not lose it. If it is not broken it can be reused if you do not have a replacement O Ring gasket to put back in. There is a spring that rests between the Clutch cover and a locking nut. Remove the spring and remove the locking nut. Using a small flathead screwdriver, loosen the adjuster screw that is under the locking nut counter clockwise to help allow enough slack in the Clutch cable so that the whole Throw out bearing unit can be removed from the Primary cover. Once the Throw out bearing unit has been removed from the Primary cover, it can then be removed from the end of the Clutch cable. Now you can remove the other end of the Clutch cable from the Clutch lever on the handlebar. To install the new Clutch cable, just do the reverse. Attach the end of the new Clutch cable to the Clutch lever on the handlebar. Attach the other end of the Clutch cable to the Throw out bearing unit. Now, carefully insert the Throw out bearing unit into the primary cover and adjust the screw clockwise until there is a slight resistance to the clockwise movement and then back the screw out, counter clockwise, about a 1/8th of a turn or so. Install the locking nut and the spring and then install the O Ring type gasket between the Clutch cover and the primary cover. Secure the Clutch cover to the primary cover with the 5 or 6 screws. The final Clutch lever play is set by the Clutch cable adjusters under the rubber boot. All of this information (and more) can be found in the Service Manual.
