Default yikes, when should i shift?

so i am a new harley owner... needless to say, i am not used to all those whirrs, clanks, bonks and clunks (not to mention the suck blow whistle thing)

anyone got any good rules of thumb for changing gears? (as in at what speed= what gear?)

its kinda hard to tell if i am winding the engine to high hell, or its that "harley sound)

its an 08 heritage (nope, no tach on them)

You will be able to play it by ear with a little riding time.&nbsp\\; You should be able to tell when your winding out a motor.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; The owner manuals generally give shift information, but I never go by that anyhow.

If you are not for sure, while trying to figure it out....shift by using your speedo..
&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
1st gear.start
2nd gear at 20 mph
3rd gear at 30 mph
4th gear at 40 mph
5th gear at 50 mph
6th gear at 60 or higher......
&nbsp\\;
That will help you while you are learning, based on the sound of the engine.
&nbsp\\;
Hope that helps.
