Default oil on oil tank

I have an '05 Heritage Softail with 5,000 miles. It never fails......when it's warm weather and I ride for awhile, I accumulate about 7 or 8 spots of oil on the right side of oil tank. I have looked everywhere and can't find where it could be coming from. Is this normal?

thanks,

JC

No, this is not normal. Have you made sure that the 2 chrome oil lines at the top of tank (one is a return, the other a breather) are in tight? If you ever need to remove either of these lines, they should snap or click when you put them back into the oil tank.

And I guess it's goes with out saying, but make sure the rubber gasket around the oil dip stick is not cracked or split.

yup, have checked the lines and have even changed the stock dipstick with one that has the oil temp. Didn't do any good. I am really stumped.

Did you check inside the air cleaner. Pull the a/c cover off and see if any oil is dripping out of the breather and blowing on the tank from the wind.

Yup, I'd go the aircleaner route also. You may have too much oil in it when it's hot, which is when you should check the oil level.

thanks all. I checked the air cleaner and it's fine. I'll check the oil tomorrow, while it's hot.

thanks again

If the A/C is dry check around the rear jug rocker box cover.

just wanted to say thanks for all the responses. It ended up being the two rear bolts on the rear rocker box cover were just a little bit loose. 1/8 of a turn and now the leak is gone.

thanks again for all the help.

FWIW, MAC Tools makes a special HD flat ratcheting wrench for tightening those covers that will fit up under the gas tank. It costs about $35 but makes tightening those real easy.
