07-08 Primary chain tensioner
I'm getting more concerned about the problems with the over-tightening of the auto primary chain tensioner. My friends with 100 hp or less seem to be doing OK. The guysI know with higher output are starting to see thier chains way over tighened. These kinds of side loads in shafts and bearingscannot be a good thing. I don't wanna go to an open primary on my bagger. I don't really wanna use a primary belt at all, even on a closed primary. Sooo.... the question is, is their anything in the works to address this problem? Iv'e read the posts from last year..and I was just hoping somebody in the aftermarket, or for that matter, even HD, was trying to develope something over the last year.

RE: 07-08 Primary chain tensioner
Sounds like the chain is stretching from brutal hp allowing the ratchet to over extend it's adjustment. Even though the chain is steel, it is somewhat elastic. When you get on the power, the top stretches and when it gets to the adjuster it thinks the chain is loose and moves up a notch aswell asthe sprocket shaft in the engine is also bent backward during a heavy load loosening the chain. That's right, the crank bends under load. The only thing to do in this condition is to go to a manual tensioner, or a non ratcheted type like M6 or HB 125. If you are clever, you can safetey wire the ratchet on the HD adjuster as well, but then it will be back to manual adjustment from that point on. Even though I like the HD auto adjuster for stock - 100 hp, in your case I think I'd be thinking HB 125, if it will install into the late model primary.
