RE: my sportster has shifter on RIGHT!
ORIGINAL: Neckball
Interesting thought, I hadn't heard that one before. Shifters are now on the left and they're still racing 'em.
Explaination I had always heard was, the Sportster was originally developed to compete with the British sport bikes such as Triumph, Norton, Bsa, which was a market that H-D didn't have a bike for. The Brits were using a right side shifter at the time.
The shifter is on the right 'cause the Sporty was developed to race as well as tootle around on the street.

I learned to ride on right side shifting Triumph's BSA's and Bultaco's. It's easy enough to do, plus you don't have to worry about some dipshit stealing it. Same reason I had a hand-banger on the first Shovelhead I built, I didn't even need to take the key out when I parked it.

my first harley was a 73 ironhead with right hand shift....DONT change it...i did this....put a highway footpeg bar at just the height to allow you to shift with your heel...for upshifts use the crux of your boot at the top of the heel and of course for downs use the bottom(stompin part)...i adapted quickly and loved it
