starter problems

Default starter problems

my pinion gear goes into my clutch ring gear fine,but it starts too turn over about half the time and then even while the pinion gear is in the clutch ring it starts too "whirl" not moving . any ideas?

Ya- it is a bad starter drive.

More than likely the bendix is shot, often referred to as the starter clutch.

Starter drive, Bendex (brand name), starter clutch is a new one for me. I think they are all the same. - the ratcheting dohickie with the little gear on the end. It is the ratcheting part that is failing in your dohickie. There is no such thing as a "bad starter" only failed components such as the gear, Bendex drive, brushes, springs, armature, field, solenoid contacts, solenoid coil, linkages, etc. It would be like having a "bad engine"
