Default Transmission drain nut

I recently change my transmission oi and when I tighten the drain nut back on, I think I overtighten it to about 15ft/lb... Found out later from the manual that it should be only around 2 ft/lb.

My question is... How bad is this? Did I do any damage? What should I do now? Should I unscrew and tighten to 2 ft/lb?

Thanks in advance.

Doesn't sound grossly overtightened, just crack it loose and re torque it otherwise when it gets hot, it may be a different story. No big deal here, don't loose any sleep over it.

Before you do anything, you might get a new o-ring from the Harley shop. The original one could have been damaged when you made it up and loosening it might cause the transmission to seep a bit. It will be a pain in the rear as you'll have to drain the transmission again and refill it but it might be worth it. Guess you could try to loosen it a bit and see what happens.

Thanks! I had ride my bike quite a few times already... Total less than 100 miles since the transmission oil change.... Am I still okay? I guess I should take the nut out and have a good look... I got Syn 3 in it now... Might as well switch to Mobil 1 gear this time...

Thanks!... Yes, I went to dealer and bought a few new o-rings... Probably going with Mobil 1 75-90 this time since I am going through the trouble again.... Got syn 3 in it now.

While I was getting new o-ring, Harley dealer sold me one of those loctite 565.

He told me to put that on all 3 drain nuts during oil changes.

Anyone use Loctite 565? Should I use it?

Thanks!

I am trying to decide if I should use the loctite 565 on oil drain bolts as well. If you use them how difficult is it to remove them? Then do you have a hard time cleaning the threads to re-install? [sm=smiley25.gif] KB

You really don't need locktite on the drain plugs, just torque them in and you'll be OK.

Thanks!

I use some Loctite 565 when I change my oil last week... Looks like when I brought my bike back to dealer, they use some of those stuff...

Dealer told me Loctite 565 help to hold the nuts in place and prevent oil from sipping through.

I understand that you could clean the threads of the drain nut but how do you clean threads in gearbox when oil is always going to be present. Wouldnt locktite need a clean surface to work propley. I would be just using the oring.
