I understand that you could clean the threads of the drain nut but how do you clean threads in gearbox when oil is always going to be present. Wouldnt locktite need a clean surface to work propley. I would be just using the oring.
I think the loctite 565 works kind of like those teflon tapes on pipes at home... BTW, it contains teflon.

Never thought about cleaning the threads in gearbox ... Only on the nut so far...

I recently change my transmission oi and when I tighten the drain nut back on, I think I overtighten it to about 15ft/lb... Found out later from the manual that it should be only around 2 ft/lb.

My question is... How bad is this? Did I do any damage? What should I do now? Should I unscrew and tighten to 2 ft/lb?

Thanks in advance.

MY bad ... I was never wrong to begin with... 15ft/lb was correct on both engine and transmission drain nuts... Primary drain nut is 3-5 ft/lb.

Thanks for those for responding anyway....

am confused - section 1-19 of the '05HD touring service manual says "install the transmission drain plug and tighten to 14-21 ft-lbs"
has there been an update to this info or is a duece different from an RKC?

Filler plug is the one on top where you pour in transmission oil... 25-75 in/lb sounds about right... drain nut should be 15-20 ft/lb

I don't think you have a problem.

My manual says 14 to 21 ft lbs for the drain plugs. 25 to 75 Inch lbs for the filler cap.

Loctite 565 is a liquid thread sealer. It is considered a controlled strength loctite. And it provides vibration resistance. It does not require a lot of force to remove. It does however keep fluids from leaking through. It is applied to a clean surface. Old stuff is removable with a wire brush. And yes you should remove the old stuff from the case threads.

Even with the o-ring, one more leak prevention is a good thing.
