What is the attraction of a six speed transmission vs. a five speed? I have even seen discussions of a seven speed.

I have a five speed, and, IMHO, fifth needs to be geared higher. The only time it is really usable is for fuel economy while cruising--you never get there until 70 plus. The spread from 4th to fifth is pretty narrow.

Here's why I want a 6 speed (or higher gearing):
Am going out to Alpine and Marfa Texas in the spring. Going out there, we'll take the scenic route, so 5 speed is fine. Coming home, we will be haulin' azz in I-10, where the speed limit is 80. We usually go 5 over the speed limit. My Dyna does 70mph in 5th fine. 85 mph, sustained, for 2-3 hours, is gonna buzz me to death. if I had one more gear, I could cruise easily at 85mph

I don't know about where you live, but here in AZ the HWY speed limit is 65mph and Interstates are 75mph. That's why I have a 6 speed on my evo.

The six speed is nice but not a reason to trade or install one. Cost not worth it.
6th gear 3000 rpms = 80 mph.
On flat road no pull I run 6th all the time. If you want to take off real fast drop a gear and go.
I still enjoy riding my FB with 5 speed and it gets me everywere it ever did.
But the 6 speed on my RG is nice

Well, out on the super slab, there's a sweet spot in 6th between 72 and 74 mph that comes in a consistant 54 mpg!

The sixth gear is good as long as it`s an overdrive sixth. The new factory six is a 1:1 final drive ratio. The only way that it`s better (if you see it that way) is because they change the primary drive ratio which changes all the gear ratios as opposed to the five speeds which still end up at 1:1.You can get a better ratio by changing pulleys, your primary ratio or by installing a twistgear kit.I`ve got the twistgear and have no need for a six.Toby

I'm saving up my money for the twistgear. Should hopefully have the money in another month.

I use to have the same attitude about my 07 deluxe. Then I upgraded the exhaust, air breather and ecm. Now the bike feels like I thought it should. Shouldn't have to do that to a new bike to make it feel right, but I am glad I did.
