Primary Gasket Replacement Advice
For some reason I havedeveloped asmall leak from my primary case. It looks likeI just need a new primary gasket. Not sure why or how that gasket got buggered up, but here's my question:Should I look to do anything else while changing thisgasket and having the primary cover off?I see gasketkits that have several gaskets and seals, but I am prettysure it's just the large outside primary gasket the needs changing.
What is your experience or advice?
Thanks

If you havn't already check the tightness first before removing all the bolts. Not much in there to do other than maybe a clutch adjustment if you feel the need. Don't go nuts if the chain feels snug. Push down on it in the center between thesprockets and watch the shoe go down. That's how it should be.You should only need the outer gasket if you go that route.

RE: Primary Gasket Replacement Advice
I would look at the drain plug. I'm not to fond of the way H/D designed the seatingsurfaces between the drain plugs and the threaded hole. The primary, trans. and the engine oil drain all have an o-ring to seal things soas they don't leak, but I've found out that the o-rings tear very easy. I've had good luck with pipedope on the threads and "fill" for the o-ring, don't overtighten.

Of course, the o-ring has already been over-tightened and the damage has been done, and you don't find out this has happened untill the plug is removed. The next time you changeany of the oils and you're putting the plug back in, just "feel for it". The plug will start to get tight, and then it gets a little loose. But then it's too late, the o-ring is torn, and that really bugs me cause I like to get things tight, not snug. I think H/D might should think about going to a plug that uses a copper or brass sealing ring. But then I guesswe would then over tighten and strip-out the threads.
