Default Belray tranny lube in 07 6 speed?

I recently took my 07 Heritage to a local bike shop for the 5000 mile service because my Harley dealer is 70 miles away and the temp was in the 30's. The mechanic there who was recommened to me by some other Harley friends of mine talked me into replacing the Syn 3 that the Harley dealer put in at the 1000 mile service with HD 20/50 engine oil, HD Formula for the primary, and Bel-Ray gear lube for the tranny. However I read in my manual that for the 6 speeds Harley recommends Formula for the Tranny also. Will the Bel-Ray cause problems in my 6 speed 07?

One of the guys at the dealship (not a mechanic) told me not to use BelRay in my '07 6 speed, and put Formula in at the servicing. The tranny was making noise & was clunking during shifting. I drained in and have been using Bel Ray since. I have 18 k on it now and have had no problems. So I don't have a clue what they're talking about. And I've used Syn 3 in the last three Harleys for a total of 46k in the last 5 years.

Appreciate the response, definately make me feel better. I had noticed that on the 2000 and up 5speed Harley recommended BelRay for for the tranny but for the 06 and up 6 speeds they were recommending HD Formula for the primary and tranny. I notice tranny was much quiter with the Bel Ray and my shift point in 5th gear to sixth was later than with the syn -3. Thanks, Dave

The "guy at the dealership" is misinformed. Any gear oil is better than Formula+, which is only a mediocre engine oil with a high price tag. I asked HD tier 2 tech support about using 85w140 synthetic in my '07 SG and he said it would be fine, and would likely smooth it out and nix some of the clattering I had prior to installing IDS. After this I will be using a 75w90 synthetic gear oil since I've installed IDS and the clattering is gone.

Bel Ray is a well-known brand, and I would not hesitate using it. Most people on this forum are using gear oil in their late-model trannies.

I had this same discussion with my mechanic earlier today and told him the Formula clunked in my 07 FXD. I have always had the best performance in all my trannys with Bel Ray. I understand Spectro has come out with a new tranny fluid just for the HD six speeds but don't have any personal experience wth it yet.

My Harley dealer recommends the Bel Ray 85W 140 gear oil for the tranny. Says this what the techs put in when they change the fluids. They also put in the HD 20W 50 in the engine and the Formula + in the chaincase primary.

I have been using Belray 85/140 hypoid gear oil in my 07FXDC dyna superglide since i did my first 500 mile service. i put it in in my garage and put Amsoil 20/50 in the primary and oil. sounds good and runs good and i put 10,000 miles on the bike the first 5 months i owned it no problems so far......
