Stand the bike up straight, take the primary cover off, look to see where the fluid level is, if it is over the line on the diagram above take some out. If it is real close don't worry about it. You dont want it over filled any more than you want it under filled, if it is over filled your fluid can foam up and also cause excessive drag. By the way what bike are you working on and is it stock? It will also take different amounts if you are just changing it or if you take the primary off. I would not just go by what the manual says, the fluid will drain out differently depending what viscosity it is and how hot cold it is.

And ignore Rounders, he just likes to hear himself talk, regardless of whether be knows what he’s talking about…which is rare.

One of my twin cams is 38 ounces, the other two are different.

Besides using the correct amount, my crazy talk is to look in the manual and just use that amount. While I have checked it a few times, 99% I just dumb the correct amount in, and do just fine.

Thats why you need to go by the manual. You got guys saying I been putting this in since.... Granted I don't think it overly matters

The manual DOES NOT KNOW how much fluid actually drained out of your primary. Thin fluid, thick fluid, quick drain, overnight drain....... it doesn't know how much it STILL left in the housing. Different people use different fluids and techniques. Use what you like and fill it to the line in the previously posted diagram and KNOW that it's at the correct level. If you REALLY need to know the amount that you put in there, look at the side of the bottle after you fill it to the correct level and do the math

Ok. Fluid level good. Drained it all and refilled. Now, pop into first gear, major loud clunk. Keeping clutch in, go through all gears and back to first, smooth (on jack). Then, release clutch in N and go back to 1st and again major clunk. Clutch cable looks fine. Adjust the plate?

They all clunk a bit going into first. But if it’s a MAJOR clunk, then likely the clutch plates aren’t releasing enough. Either adjustment or too much fluid. I’d double check the fluid level. Just a bit overfilled causes the plates to drag. Then use the procedure in the clutch adjustment procedure….and don’t short cut the procedure.
