You must not have seen that when you tried to look up the answer in google so you could come here and make another babbling post.

The manual is often incorrect when it comes to the amount of lube needed (my `89 service manual says fill up to the derby cover opening with bike straight up), that must not be in google either.
The primaries and trannies have different capacities over the years, and how measured. Not a matter of misprints in the manual. I realize it is not 64 ounces. But you will get someone who says I have put X ounces in since 1985.

Again typically I just dump the amount in from the manual, and don't waste my time checking unless I have a leak or the primary was dry. Yes you can look at where it is on clutch, but you need a starting point.

2016 maybe they went the narrower primary like the lows, takes less. 5 speeds less than 6s. Transmissions keep changing too.

@ethologicac This is a good example of why you need to be careful about who you listen to on a forum.

Some are here to disrupt and talk about themselves.

Just click on a name and you can pull up all the previous posts made by a person, that will give you an idea how legitimate that person is.

The fact is primary capacities have changed over the years, but the method to measure the correct level is the same for all big twins with a wet clutch (mid `85 and later).

If not for you wanting to disrupt, I would have had one post in this thread. One post on topic too

I think where I made my mistake, maybe, I drained it while it was on the side stand; it wasn’t on the jack, wasn’t vertical. Would that cause what I’m seeing? Do I have more to do to make things right? That first shift into first is extremely loud and clunky but then it shifts great.

it was on the jack but only raised enough to get it vertical, not leaning. Rear wasn’t higher.

Drain the lube into a clean container, refill the primary to the correct level (bike standing up), you will be good to go.

Drain it on kickstand. Put the amount the manual says, and move on with your life.

I agree. Use that nice graphic Dan posted for you, grab a flashlight and make sure you get it to the right level and everything will work as it should.

Staggering levels of stupidity! Follow the diagram provided and you’ll be fine. Odds are it’s around a quart but don’t get hung up on ounces just follow the diagram. If you’re off by an ounce or 2 the bike won’t care.

Something very wrong if it took more than 32 oz. Drain. And start over. My best clutch and shifting performance was with HD Formula+, And fill as per @Dan89FLSTC . Over filling, even by a little will cause the clutch plates to drag, and hsrd shifting, and hard to find neutral.

And ignore Rounders, he just likes to hear himself talk, regardless of whether be knows what he’s talking about…which is rare.

oh yeah,.make sure it really is the primary that you are draining and filling.
