Default Clutch Flush Transmission Cover

Time to flush the clutch system. When removing the side cover on the transmission to get access to the bleeder, I’ve found that the cover won’t clear the exhaust. Service manual says the exhaust may need to be loosened to remove the cover. Looks like the whole system needs to be loosened. Anyone have any experience with this? Do I need to loosen the whole exhaust system to get the cover off?

I did mine recently on my 2017 Road Glide. I was pleasantly surprised to find that in addition to loosening several points on the exhaust I also had to loosen my header at the engine in order to allow enough room to take the clutch cover off. I can't imagine a worse, less user friendly design. I ended up using a dremel to cut the corner off of the clutch cover. I tightened everything back up then kept trimming small pieces off until I was able to slip the clutch cover back in place with everything bolted where it should be. When I put the plastic edge trim back over the cut edge you can't even tell the cover was trimmed. With the cover installed it does not look any different than before, but now I don't have to take the bike apart to perform what should be simple maintenance.

Good luck!

Yes, you must loosen the exhaust system.

After you get it off, do yourself a favor and trim the bottom of the cover, so next time you remove two screws and you are off to the races.

I third the recommendation to trim the cover to clear your exhaust.

May be my head pipe, no problem taking it off and looking at how it fit, how it came off, I can’t see what all these others are saying, no trimming required, went back on as easy as I took it off ????

On my 19sg I just loosened the heat shields 4 clamps. Then I was able to wiggle the cover back and forth and it popped off....
