Default Transmission main shaft leak

98 Road King SE 6 speed. I have transmission gear oil that seems to be coming through the main drive pulley splines. The shift shaft is dry and the main shaft seal doesn't appear to be leaking. Oil is on the back and front of the main drive pulley. I run 85/140 gear oil so I'm sure it isn't primary oil. Anyone have any ideas or come across this problem.

No sense in guessing...
You need to remove the inner primary and find the leak, or better yet, just replace all the seals and the spacer.

I have the same problem.I’ll keep adding oil til I have the will to pull it apart, again.I need to add a little every 300+ miles. Keep tabs on your oil level if it’s just a slight drip.

Thank You for the reply Max. You are right after removing the lock plate the pulley nut was loose. This after carefully torqued to spec. Any idea what could cause the pulley nut to lose it's torque? I've done several of these SE 5 speed gearsets and never had this problem. I don't want to re-assemble without understanding what I may have done wrong. Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

i have seen the inner splines on the pulley wear and strip or fail, if the spline fit gets loose it can work the nut loose in the lock plate and it snowballs from there. when you had it apart did you inspect the pulley splines?

It's a brand new SE 6 speed and pulley. Pulley fits tight as it should. And was carefully torqued to spec. So I'm having a hard time understanding what I may have overlooked or done wrong.

If the splines on the main drive gear are worn or damaged, it can allow the pulley to rock back and forth (or wobble), loosening the nut.

Be very picky when inspecting any type of splines.

Mine didn’t look worn either, but after loosening and replacing the front pulley 2x . I had to bite the bullet and replaced the main drive gear.
