Not sure who you talked to but if you have the whole clutch assembly including the basket, I'll bet it will fit.

Look at the instructions for SE clutch that I posted here..

It says that the SE clutch that fits all 5 speed twin cams can be made to work on a 94-97 with only an outer hub change. The outer hub is the same as the TC clutch hub.

Ask the guy if a 98 clutch works in a 94-97, it should. If so then a 99 will fit. The only issue might be if your buddies clutch is off a EFI TC, then it will have a 37 tooth sprocket on the basket. You can use it if you swap to a 24 tooth motor sprocket but it changes overall gearing from 3.15 to 3.30 (iirc)
