Default Clutch adjustment wierdness.

I was having problems finding nuetral so I decided to adjust the clutch.
The clutch lever was normal before I adjusted the clutch.
After the adjustment the clutch engages and disengages fine but the clutch lever no longer pulls all the way back to the grip.
I readjusted the slack in the cable and no change.
I readjusted the clutch several more times and it is still doing the same thing.
What I did.
Loosened the cable.
backed out the clutch adjustment.
Turned in the adjustment screw finger tight.
Tightened 1/2 to 3/4 turn in.
Tighten the adjustment nut.
Take the slack out of the cable.

When I pull in the clutch lever it stops about 3/4 inch before touching the grip.
It always pulled all of the way to the grip before.

Has anyone seen this before?

The adjuster screw should be loosened 1/2 to 3/4 turn, not tightened.

Sorry, I wrote it down wrong.
I did back the adjustment screw out rather than in.

Not even finger tight,
Turn it in until the allen wrench can just stop under its own weight,
then back it out 1/2 - 3/4 of a turn.
Then tighten the cable adjuster until there's a quarter's (25 cents) thickness of free play at the perch.

My guess is you didn't start from no play at the clutch. Most newbees start with loosen the cable too much. Then they don't lever it while finding no play. Done that way, you know when it is at zero. Be sure to screw in in past no play a turn in the beginning to deburr fine threads.

I know it says that first part in service manual. But it also says you should be able to fill clutch to get cam and ***** in correct position. Loosen cable too much interferes with that.

Does the bike have the stock clutch still installed? I went with an aftermarket clutch and it turned out I only needed to back out the adjuster 1/4 turn...if i went any more it had issues.

As far as I know it has the stock clutch.
I'll try and readjust with the cable loosened up less.
Thanks

This is the problem if done this way. The center adjuster should be tightened to 0 slack then add a little til it feels tight or you see the pressure plate move. You can check to see it there is still plenty of slack at the lever, typically over 1/2 the travel. If not something is wrong with the cable. Back off the center screw til you feel it come loose then continue for another 1/2 to 1 turn. Adjust clutch to desired free play.. If the lever hangs up going to the grip, there is likely something wrong with the throw out mechanism.

Gee, I guess my manual is wrong then, Thanks for clarifying.
