Default clutch problem

The clutch cable on my 2012 Heritage keeps loosening rapidly. I can adjust it inside the primary, then on the cable, and after a few pulls on the lever there is lots of slack. The cable is a braided non-stock cable that was put on when the previous owner put a set of beach bars on the bike. After adjusting it yesterday, I went out for a ride. About twenty five miles in, the clutch started dragging like crazy, and the cable had become so loose that there is no effect when it's pulled in. I re-adjusted it several times, and it just keeps loosening with 5 or 10 pulls on the lever. The adjustment is all the way out, so there is no more to go on the cable. Should I replace the cable? Something wrong inside the cable cover? I havent pulled the cover yet... Ideas?

Could be a number of things. Bad inner clutch cable..It's slowly coming apart. If adjusting the center of the clutch brings it back, it is likely a bad throwout bearing. or loose clutch hub nut. It could also be a trap door bearing. Also in some cases the clutch frictions could be coming apart.

I've never been able to get mine adjusted correctly when doing it by the service manual. Try this:

1. Collapse the clutch adjustment all the way down
2. Adjust the tension on the clutch nut till you feel the level just start to move and lock it down
3 go back and adjust the clutch cable tension till you have about 1/8 of slack in the lever at the tip.
