Shop opened my 1997 Evo engine. Told me lifter had gone bad and tore up/into (?) camshaft. Needs new cam and lifters. Can anyone explain this to me?What kinda time and money is involved?

 

Depends on the shop and what else might have be taken out. A brother just had the samething happen, I think he spent around $300 to $400. He may have had someother things done at the same time. I'll try to remember to ask.

 

This is a very easy job on an EVO.Basic tooling is all thats needed and a manual or friend if doing work for the first time.Most likely the lifter roller failed and damage should be primarily to cam only.Just make sure you get all the pieces.Stock style cams arent that expensive and lifters may run you around 35 bucks a piece if using JD units,gaskets for everything should be under 10 bucks,lifter block gaskets are around a dolloar fifty each.Maybe 2 hrs labor max if adjustable pushrods are used instead of stock one piece units.Otherwise top end will have to come off,more gaskets,more labor.Not sure of your bikes mileage but replacing inner cam brg might be worth wild at this time.Tooling will be needed for that.
