Default shift peg not returning to proper position after shifting

2005 Harley Fatboy When I up shift with heel peg shift the front peg stays up and heel peg stays down I have to tap the front peg down to upshift again. And when down shifting I have to do the same thing, tap the heel peg down to make font shift peg come up

Are the splines of the shifter levers and/or the splines on the shaft in proper shape?

Disconnect the shift lever from the shift rod, at the transmission end, now move the heel toe levers and make sure they are able to move freely.

Check the shift lever at the transmission, make sure it is tight onto the shaft, no wobble or slipping whatsoever.

If the lever is secure, shift the transmission and see if the lever returns to its centered position. You should feel the spring centering the lever.

I assume that in your described situation you still can shift the bike in gear? There is a spring that brings your shift lever back in place, maybe you might want to have a look at this. Check the spring with number 21 in the drawing. If adjusting toe/heel lever does not work.
