Default Belt drive HP limit

What say the experts? How much horsepower /torque is the standard belt drive on a touring HD capable of handling in a street driven sometimes flogged upon set up? Thanks for any input. Mike

I suspect there is no simple answer to that. Some owners who install 120 and 124 engines change to chain drive, while others stay with a belt. What have you in mind?

Was just curious as to the limits before components start to overstress. I'm pushing about 110 hp with my deal and was thinking of building a 140-150 hp deal down the road. I'm sure the stock 6 speed has its limits as well. Just trying to see what other upgrades might be required with that much horsepower. Thanks, Mike

I had a 120HP stroker with belt drive. But never raced it or wound it tight all of the time. Now if I was going have more fun with it and over 120 HP I would have a chain. Belts slip and break.

Some of the chaps in the Tech Engine section would be able to expand on this, thinking in particular of Scott from Hillside. They routinely build high output engines for customers and have many years experience of doing so - and can build you that big motor! Call over there and see what is going on.

Scott's great. He did all my machine and head work on my current ride. I burned his ear off enough on that. Lol

You're moving in the right circles! I make do with approaching 110/110 at present, using a 1 1/8" belt on my old Glide. The current factory trikes use that size of belt, which gives a possible upgrade for a tuned later spec solo bike, to stay with a belt. The front pulley is common across the range and years, only a trike rear pulley would be necessary.

Only time I've seen a belt fail is a 124" and the rider staged like at a dragstrip launch and did a "dead hook."
Countershaft pulley sheared the rubber teeth on the belt. The belt itself did not break.
