I've done a lot on my bike, I'm putting the starter back in, now I'm forgetting, there are 2 wires, one has a plug, no problem with that, the other is black with a mount ring, and the only place it reaches is the post on the solinoid with the positive bat cable, I'm wondering if this is correct

 

That black wire you mention sounds like the ground for the electrical system. That should go somewhere near the engine case where the starter mounts.
