Inner primary bearing gone
Hey guys, 07 Electra Glide 41k miles, just had a major sound coming from inner primary while riding. Had a leak from the bearing area but couldn't tell if it was trans or primary, put in some dye in the primary and ran it......it was coming from the primary bearing area.
Attached is pics of inner primary with a groove ground into it, wasn't there 10K miles ago.
Next is the inner primary bearing with some damage to a few of the rollers.
Next two are the output shaft of the trans......some damage to the area that contacts the primary inner bearing or is that the inner race that needs to be replaced?. Shaft moves smoothly with no noise or binding, feels good.
I am replacing the primary inner bearing........big question is.....is that trans shaft toast?
Can I use it again?
Should I change out the clutch bearing too? ( haven't opened the clutch basket yet)

Thanks Mark......I have to get that race off now that I will be using your bearing on there......and as you can see...it's already walked inboard and not accessible using the conventional puller. Thought of using heat but don't want to chance ruining the seals on the shaft.....also thought of the cutting..scary proposition to avoid the shaft.......found another puller for walked races by another manufacturer......gonna give it a try as it doesn't hurt the shaft nor seals.
And it appears the run out is at .003 at the point between the threads and the grooves.

You didn't recently **** off a voodoo witch doctor or something did you? Will the race move at all at this point? In/out will it spin?

the new race I have measures .997 wide. the service manual says the gap between your arrows should be .100-.125, so I'd say it's moved about a 1/4" or so...
as long as the bearing and seal both ride on the new race, it really don't matter how far it's on, except to have enough room on the trans side to get a puller behind it
