Default What should be proper play

I just bought the 2007 Road King and noticed the bike "creeping" while at the stop light and it was hard finding neutral. I called HD and they said to adjust the cable down by the front fender where there was a 9/16" nut. I did this tonight and got it to stop creeping and neutral is very easy to shift in to. My question is this. How much play should there be in the clutch? I have about 1/8" in it now, but if I need more, I can adjust it to what I should have. I took it out for a ride and no problems were noted. Also, what life span should I get out of the clutch cable?

Default RE: What should be proper play

The clutch actually has two adjustments. The cable adjustment you described is the simplist of the two but both are relatively easy. Just remember, as the bike heats up, the 1/8" slack will get bigger. Adjusting the cable so it has the LEAST slack possible, without making the clutch slip, is correct. Sounds like yours had too much slack, causing the clutch to drag.

The other adjustment, at the basket under the derby (big round cover on the outer primary , closest to the rear) adjusts the start point of the cable pull.
You need to adjust it due to wear and other factors like cable "stretch" (actually cables don't stretch but rather become more seated at their stops). The manual calls for 1/2 to 1 full turn out from lightly seated. The 1/2 turn out, for most, makes for the best adjustment, again IF the clutch doesn't slip. Remember, turning the adjuster in (clockwise) biases towards slipping and out toward dragging. This is just basic info to show you how it works. The actual proceedure should be in your owner's manual or shop manual which YOU SHOULD BUY.

Overfilling the primary can also cause clutch drag but always try adjusting the cable and clutch adjustment before assuming the problem is in the fluid level. This is especially true if the drag occurs after normal operation, not just after changing the fluid.

The proceedures for these adjustments are very well described in the do it yourself section of this site also.

Hope that helps a bit.
