Default Secondary Drive belt

Recently broke drive belt and when I checked it over appeared to have rub marks on top of belt. When I replaced it I noticed that the inner primary over the top of belt appeared to have rub marks also. Any Idea what my cause this??? My bike is a 1985 FXWG mostly stock and just got it back together after a few years appart. Some one said my shocks might be bad but wasn't sure if this would do it.

The belt might have been a little loose, and on deceleration the belt would arch and come in contact with the primary. You really got to take the slack out of the belt...almost to the point that you think that it's to tight.
