anyone know what causes bucking at low speeds. when i get on and off the throttle at low speeds the bike feels like its bucking.this is my first harley.im guessing loose chain.its a 1995 softail with 13,000 miles on it just bought it.
Could also be you may be lugging the motor too low of RPMs. Motors tend to cough and sputter when cranking on the throttle (if they are carbed) if you lugg them to low. Not good on the motor either.
Sounds like yopur lugging it. Shouldn't really run the RPM below 2000 when cruising. Lugging is as bad or worse for the motor than reving it, causes the piston to wobble. Just try running the next gear down, shouldn't be an issue.
The cure is usually to bring the primary chain play into spec.Too loose, bucks, too tight whines. Better loose a bit than tight. Check it COLD, it will tighten as it gets hot from expansion. Use a new inspection cover gasket and have a couple extra torx screws handy if you find one is a bit stripped. Think its a T27.
Mine does the same thing in first gear going around the subdivision. I think it's fuel related. It's a stock 07 FXSTC. Rpms are not stable at idle and slightly above.

I just changed the transmission in my bike making all correct adjustments to the drive chain and clutch however my bike is bucking in 4th gear now...tightening drive chain did not correct the problem either (adjustments made while the engine was cold)....does anyone know what else could cause this problem?!
I've also noticed that the clutch doesn't seem to disengage fully....as it's still grabbing (while in gear and the clutch lever pulled back to the handlebars...it doesn't roll very smoothly)...never had these issues before I changed the transmission.

You should start a new thread...do it in the sportster section. Lots of great, knowledgeable people that will see it there long before they see it on a 14 year old revival
