shifter problem

Default shifter problem
Hey there I have a 75 Harley davidson sportster hardtail. And it has forward controls on it .And when I go to shift it into first gear the bike tries to dies and sometimes it does was wondering if anybody could steer me in the right direction on how to fix the problem.

Does the bike lurch forward when before it dies.

Is this a problem that just developed or has it been going on for a while? Just trying to get some back ground on the bike.
